We are looking at the possibility,in the future, of doing
some work in Ada. The hosting, or development, environment will
be Apollo workstations and the target environment will be in all
likelihood an Intel 80386/iRMX/MultibusII system.
I would like to know then if anyone knows
         i) of the various merits of the different Ada compilers for
           Apollos

ii) having answered that question can these compilers
            provide support for 386 boards.

Feel free to either post to net or e-mail responses to me.

        Thanks in advance.

Alsys, TeleSoft and Verdix all have compilers hosted on the Apollo
and at least two (Alsys and Verdix) have announced 386 target
capability, though not necessarily on the Apollo host. Also PSS is
targeting the Tartan Labs compiler to the 386.

One word to the wise from someone who used to be in Marketing, there
are many modes in which to run code on the 386, so it is possible to
have a 386 compiler which in fact just makes the chip run like a very
fast 8086 or 80286. Good questions to ask are about address space
and instruction sets used.

Disclaimer: Through present and past affiliations, I've been a customer
of Alsys, TeleSoft and Verdix (no, I am not going to pick
between them, they are all in my personal opinion, industrial-
            strength systems).
2nd Disclaimer: This was posted to comp.lang.ada on Usenet. If, through the
magic of gateways, this constitutes a commercial endorsement
in a message on the Internet, then perchance there is a lack
of moderation at the gateway site.
