ARC NEWS INTERVIEWS RIG CHAIR

The August, 1996 issue of ARC News published an interview 
with James W. Moore, Special Assistant for Standards and 
Reuse at the MITRE Corporation and founder and Chair of the 
Reuse Library Interoperability Group (RIG). Moore discussed 
the RIG's achievements, -- including the Basic 
Interoperability Data Model -- challenges it has had to 
overcome, and future plans.

Moore noted that one of the biggest challenges the RIG has 
had to overcome is being ahead of the times in respect to 
reusing components from other libraries. He also discussed 
the importance of intellectual property rights and RIG's 
intention to extend its data model to carry this information 
along with the asset.

Future priorities noted by Moore are to provide additional 
extensions to the data model to satisfy additional needs and 
to bond the data model to networks other than the WWW. The 
RIG is looking toward a "reference model" that explains how 
the various needed items fit together.
