Reuse News Brief
Week Ending: July 12, 1996

SUCCEEDING WITH OBJECTS: REUSE IN REALITY
**********************************************

Ivar Jacobson discussed the reuse lessons learned nearly 30
years ago by Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications company,
in an article in July's Object Magazine. When developing a
new generation of software-based switching systems in the
late 1960's, Ericsson achieved a high degree of reuse by
designing the system architecture, the development
processes, and the organization in harmony. "All three
supported reuse as the natural way of working," said
Jacobson.

Jacobson claims architecture as the "key to success" and
describes its use by Ericsson in detail in the article. He
also relates the problems encountered by Ericsson and
states, "All these combined experiences tell us that reuse
does not happen by itself! Rather, achieving reuse is
difficult. The only way we have observed that it is
repeatable, manageable, and predictable is a systematic
approach that reengineers everything about how you develop
systems, with the explicit goal being to achieve reuse!"

Jacobson also discussed his continuing work (first at
Objectory and now at Rational) on developing a configurable
process for reuse. It will constitute the starting point for
an organization to reengineer itself by means of system
architecture, development processes, and organization to
achieve reuse. "The technology is based on our use-case
driven, OO-based approaches for business and systems
engineering. We have named it Reuse Driven Software
Engineering Businesses (RSEB)," Jacobson states. RSEB is
based on three harmonized cornerstones: Architecture,
Process, and Organization, which Jacobson describes in
detail.
