Abstract
Most software development methods define notations for modelling global
behaviour. Many of these notations use interaction diagrams to model
possible sequences of interactions between a system and its environment, or
between the objects of the system. Other methods use structured textual
descriptions or regular expressions for specifying use cases or use
scenarios. Although many methods use similar notations, there are often
substantial differences in their underlying concepts and in the content
expressed by the diagrams. On the other hand, completely different notations
use sometimes the same concepts and show the same aspects of the global
behaviour of a system.

In this talk we will describe the characteristics of different notations. We
will show some of their underlying concepts and how these relate to each
other. Finally, we will give a short overview of the techniques for
modelling global behaviour that are used by some of the current
object-oriented analysis methods.

About the speaker
Dorothea Beringer graduated in 1989 in Computer Science at the University of
Bern. After working for some time as a software engineer she got involved
into consulting for quality assurance, project management and software
development methods. In 1994 she joined the software engineering laboratory
of the EPFL. Her domains of research include object-oriented analysis,
especially the modelling of global behaviour.

These talks are free and open to all.
