THE REALITY OF OBJECT REUSE
*******************************
"The Reality of Object Reuse," an article published in the
most recent edition of Computerworld, discusses the
difficulties associated with implementing reuse. According
to the article, corporate information systems shops are
using object-oriented languages and tools in expectation of
cutting development time through reuse. The reality for most
corporations is that reuse has been a struggle.
"After five years with objects, we are now putting together
processes so that we are actually reusing components," said
Andre Cassulo, principle systems integrator at Florida Power
& Light Co. "Reuse doesn't happen in a vacuum. You have to
plan for it and schedule for it because it does mean more
initial work," Cassulo said.
Computerworld offers the following tips for reusing object-
oriented software assets:
* Identify reuse opportunities during design, not
implementation.
* Make sure your team understands how to build for reuse.
* Try to recycle components and frameworks, not code.
* Recycle patterns and style, which makes other kinds of
reuse easier.
* Use examples to document how components are reused.
