PURPOSES OF THE OPEN HOUSE
The purposes of this Open House are:

  1. Open House and Software Technology Forum - To introduce the audience
     to many of the projects and activities of the Software Engineering
     Department at Monmouth University, opening a forum for discussion
     of the resources available to the community and the needs of the
     community.  Sponsored by Monmouth University and the Software
     Engineering Department.

  2. Java Technology Forum - To provide a forum for the discussion of the
     topic of Java, Internet programming, and the associated issues
     (including security of the Internet).  These are hot topics, and
     large numbers of our community have shown an interest in finding
     out more.  Sponsored by Monmouth University, the Software Engineering
     Department, the Java User Group for Military Applications (JUGMAP),
     and General Dynamics Land Systems.

Monmouth University is actively supporting some of the education,
training, and research needs of our local community in Monmouth County,
New Jersey.  Our students and customers (project funding sources) come
from Fort Monmouth, AT&T Bell Labs, Bell Atlantic, the Federal Aviation
Administration Technical Center, Bell Core, The MITRE Corporation,
the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Army Research Office,
insurance companies, medical research companies, and a wide variety of
support contractors.

BRIEF SCHEDULE, FIRST DAY
A brief schedule for the Open House is:

  Wednesday, 8 May 1996 - Open House and Software Technology Forum
    A handout of one-page descriptions of our current and planned
    projects will be made available to attendees this evening.
    (see list below under 8:30-10:00PM)

  6:30-7:30PM - Open House for Prospective Students
    This is for people who are students or are interested in becoming
    students in one of the University's three technology programs:
    Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, and Software Engineering

  7:30PM-8:30PM - Welcomes and Featured Speaker
    Welcomes by Dr. Rebecca Stafford, President of Monmouth University,
    Mr. Douglas Kiliman, Manager of Engineering for General Dynamics
    Land Systems, Mr. Hal Hart, Chairman of the Special Interest Group
    in Ada of the Association for Computing Machinery, and a
    presentation by Ms. Cynthia Rand, Principal Director for
    Information Management for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense
    (Command, Control, and Communications)

  8:30PM-10:00PM - Discussions and Tour of Software Engineering Lab
    Refreshments, discussions (see below), demos, poster sessions,
    and tours of the new Software Engineering Laboratory

    Discussion of projects and activities of the Software Technology
    community at Monmouth University, including information on

  Thursday, 9 May 1996 - Java Technology Forum
    A handout of useful information will be passed out to attendees;
    sponsored by the Software Engineering Department, the Java User
    Group for Military Applications, and General Dynamics Land Systems

  9:00 - 9:30AM - Welcomes
    Opening welcome by Dr. Rebecca Stafford and Ms. Cynthia Rand;
    introductory remarks by Mr. Douglas Kiliman, Manager of
    Engineering for General Dynamics Land Systems

  9:30 - 10:30AM - Sunergy Video
    Showing of "Sunergy #15 - Internet: The Next Wave", a video by Sun
    Microsystems from their Sunergy program which introduces Java and
    presents an interesting overview of the topic.  Speakers include:
      John Gage (host) - Director, Science Office, Sun Microsystems
      Geoffrey Baehr - Chief Networking Officer, SunLabs
      Bill Joy - Vice President of Research, Sun Microsystems
      Karl Jacob - CEO, Dimension X
      Arthur van Hoff - Staff Engineer and Chief Engineer of Sun's Java
        Group, Sun Microsystems

  10:30 - 11:15AM - Sun Microsystems Presentation
    Dennis Govoni, a Chief Scientist and Java Specialist working for
    the World Wide Field Organization of Sun Microsystems Computer
    Company, will discuss Java's capabilities, usefulness, security
    issues, etc.
     
  11:15 - 12 Noon - Questions on What Java is and How it Works
    An open panel; panel members are Dr. Govoni, Dr. Taft, Mr. Dyer, 
    Professor Conn, and Professor Kannan (see list below for titles)

  12 Noon - 1:00PM - Lunch

  1:00 - 1:45PM - Demonstration of the Silicon Graphics Java Tools
    Demonstration by Silicon Graphics of their new state-of-the-art
    Java development tools in the Software Engineering Laboratory

  1:45 - 2:45PM - Java Issues
    A presentation by Dr. Tucker Taft of Intermetrics, Technical Director
    of the Ada9X Mapping/Revision Team and lead of the new Intermetrics
    Ada95 to J-Code (bytecode) compiler development team, on key issues
    and the new compiler
     
  2:45 - 3:30PM - Java in the Military
    Presentation by Mr. Robert Dyer, Moderator of the Java User Group for 
    Military Applications
     
  3:30 - 4:30PM - "What Can Java Do For You?"
    Open discussion of how Java technology might address the audience's 
    interests, concerns, and problems
     
  4:30 - 5:30PM - Wrap-up
    Review the day's issues.  Forge a plan for the future evaluation of 
    Java technology.  Summarize pointers to Java and Ada resources 
    available to you.  Turn in evaluation form.  Set up mechanisms for 
    staying in touch.

  The Journal of Defense Software Engineering," a monthly publication of
  the Software Technology Support Center, U.S. Department of Defense, has
  expressed an interest in reviewing the material from the conference for
  future publication.

COSTS
  There is no charge for attendance or materials handed out.  You will
  have out-of-pocket expense for your meals.  Refreshments are
  complimentary.

DIRECTIONS TO MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
  Monmouth University is located in West Long Branch, New Jersey,
  just 60 miles south of New York City on the Jersey Coast.  From the
  Garden State Parkway, take Exit 105.  The Parkway off ramp leads
  directly onto Route 36 East.  Continue on Route 36 East approximately
  3 miles to Route 71.  Turn right onto Route 71 South.  Go approximately
  1 mile and Route 71 will fork left and become Cedar Avenue.  The
  university has four vehicle entrances to the main campus: off Larchwood
  Avenue (which connects to Route 71), off Cedar Avenue (Route 71),
  and two entraces off Norwood Avenue (Route 71).

  The Open House will be in Howard Hall (Pollak Auditorium and the
  Software Engineering Lab) on the first day and Bey Hall (Young
  Auditorium) and Howard Hall (Software Engineering Lab) on the second
  day.

  The easiest way to get to Howard and Bey Hall is to use Larchwood Avenue
  off of Route 71.  Park in the large parking lot off of Larchwood on the
  Left.  Bey Hall is next to the large parking lot, and Howard Hall is next
  to Bey Hall (across a small roadway).

INTERESTED IN ATTENDING? - RSVPs REQUIRED
  RSVPs are required - deadline is 6 May 96.
  There are two SEPARATE RSVPs
    1. Main Presentations and evening tours, discussion, and social
        (6:30-10:00PM on 8 May 96)
    2. Java Technology Forum (9AM - 5:30PM on 9 May 96)

  To send in your RSVPs for one or both events, send email to

  When you do this, you will be added to the EDUCATIONWG email list
  of the Public Ada Library (PAL).  This list will be used to
  send out periodic updates on the event.  Your RSVP will be
  acknowledged by a List Processor that will notify you of your
  addition to this email list.
