Hi,

If a social network dedicated to Ada programmers existed, how many of
the people here would use it?

Thanks,
Luke.

If it looked like a newsgroup, I would use it :)

This is open to discussion ;D

Basically, take a social website idea use opensocial and see what we
get?

Dunno, what would you want from it?

Contacts? Ability to post jobs? Apply for jobs? A central point for
Ada pros/amateurs? Learning resources? etc.

Luke.

Isn't that what c.l.a is? In which case, by definition, everyone here uses it.

My view is that c.l.a is supposed to be restricted to discussions of Ada.

A social networking newsgroup would be a place where Ada fans could
discuss prescription medicine prices, nation-building or social welfare
issues with other Ada fans.

What I would like to see is a community-driven Ada website where we
could share resources, source code tips, presentations, etc. Something
that http://www.adapower.com/ should have become if its maintainer had
not vanished. Look at it, it's the next http://www.adahome.com/, an
obsolete-individual-effort delusion.

Let's go web 2.0.

I think it is very good idea! Community-driven Ada-centric website.

Hmmm, this seems to be rather different from what I assumed a "social"
network would be about. Although for many of us computer types,
possibly including myself, any form of contact that goes beyond
interactions between a person, his computer, and his can of Jolt cola
(or coffee mug, in my case) could be considered "social".......

:) :) :)

That's what the existing Ada wikis are. Here is a list:

English: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Ada_Programming
English: http://ada.krischik.com/index.php
French: http://fr.wikibooks.org/wiki/Programmation_Ada/FAQ/
French: http://www.ada-france.org

There may be others too.

Feel free to add to these sites and link from one another.

Something like Ohloh (http://www.ohloh.net/) would at least present
Ada -- and its fans -- as "modern" and finding solutions to the
current ITC demand and issues. Currently most ITC folks probally sees
Ada as more Dino than T.Rex ;-)

We could also try to establish "open" Ada groups in Facebook, Linkedin
or other web waterholes.

I know these wikis, in fact I'm one of the contributors of Ada
Programming wikibook. The problem with the wikibook is its perfectly
defined scope, it's a wiki for writing a text-book. The site I was
thinking about would probably have a wiki open for any subject related
to Ada, but it should include other web 2.0 features so it can become
the community-driven version of http://www.adapower.com or http://www.adaworld.com.
For example, it should include uploading of code snippets,
presentations (or embedded from something like http://www.slideshare.net/tag/ada),
submission of articles, etc. All of this content should be submitted
under a clear open-content license, like GFDL, or Creative Commons.

By the way, Ada is already in that site, see http://www.ohloh.net/languages/21

They seem to collect information from sourceforge or other open-source
repositories.

Yes, I made a point to add all Ada repositories I knew. I sent a message
to comp.lang.ada some time ago to have others register their projects.
