That's the encouraging part, because 40 years later, FORTRAN *has* been displaced, and we can safely say that in its turn C{++} (0, 2 or 4 "++") "hasn't a snowball's chance in hell" (love this expression!) to be displaced :-). Now, travel a few decades further...
