Check out the March 1995 issue of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering.
The article "The Effects of Layering and Encapsulation on Software
Development Cost and Quality" by Zweben, et al describes a study on the
benefits of layering and encapulation. The study was done as part of a
course on "Software Components in Ada" at Ohio State.
