the clever way of an unknown author (sorry)
: >|> type Max_Precision_type is digits System.Max_digits;
is quite attractive, but consider
1. "with system;" makes the program non-portable
2. max_digits could turn out to become an exotic overly expensive niche precision
my personal preference is to declare a portable type with 14 digits
which maps to an acceptable hw-mantissa.
on some machines this is (even) single precision.
