Dear all,

-- first post preamble
I run an internal Ada95 interest group. I have 6 yrs Ada experience,
but Internet, Unix, OOP etc are all new to me. Nevertheless I have
managed to do things like retrieve and install GNAT for Solaris2.3,
build emacs from the sources to use the (excellent) Ada-mode, and other
stuff like distributing the LRM and Rationale. We think GNAT is a great
project and eagerly await new releases. BTW, when I had problems with
the GNAT installation, I repeated the process right from the .tar file
and this time did *exactly as I was told*, and it does work perfectly.

-- the point
So what? Well the one thing I have never managed to do is get any
response from either gnat-request@cs.nyu.edu or gnat-chat@cs.nyu.edu.
This could easily be due to e-mail glitches at this end, but if anyone
there sees this please add me to any info. distribution lists for
either Solaris2.3 binary releases or source releases (as I understand I
should be able to bootstrap the compiler from its sources from now on
:-) :-) :-)).

Thanks,

Chris

Same for me. I have tried to subscribe three times, no answer.

The mailing list that gnat-request puts you on is pretty inactive. We
occasionally make announcements there of new versions, but the main
dialog on GNAT occurs on comp.lang.ada, which people felt was the
most reasonable approach when we discussed this a while ago.

gnat-chat is a synonym for gnat-report, and this address should be used
for all specific questions about gnat that you want to address to the
GNAT team, or if you have problems. We have received literally thousands
of messages at this address, so it seems to work OK in general. If you
are not getting any reply from gnat-report, that's strange. We don't always
respond immediately to bug reports (no immediate response means not fixed
yet, but if you don't get a response of at least a bug filing number within
say a week or so, that's unusual).

I can (evidently!) use Newsgroups, but it's on a borrowed machine,
and so about once a week is the best I can do for keeping up on
comp.lang.ada. Mail is right to my desk, almost instantaneous, so I was
hoping to get a GNAT drip-feed going! I probably missed the posts about
'where should we discuss GNAT' but if c.l.a is the place, then fine.
Ages ago I sent some thoughts to gnat-chat w.r.t the library model, but
seeing as the gnatchat notes on cs.nyu.edu never carried on, I assumed
there was some other forum I didn't know about, but I guess this is the
place to be after all! :-)

If I sound a bit self-important, forgive me. As I said, in our
company I run an internal Ada95 distibution list which is now quite
popular, what with GNAT being available and faster than all our other
compilers :-), and Ada95 being official now. My 'readers' don't have
any access to newsgroups at all, so anything I can pick up by e-mail
benefits another 20 or so Ada fans here. Also the project has picked up
a nasty C++ infection which is also bad-mouthing Ada. I'm fighting a
lonely battle :-(

BTW, even though I specifically explained my current ignorance of
Unix etc, I got some friendly requests for help with building GNAT and
using Emacs Ada-mode on Solaris. I've tried my best, but it's a case of
the blind leading the blind! It's good to hear gnat-report does work,
so I will be recommending that avenue for all further GNAT inquiries.

As for bug-reports, well, I haven't got any!

Regards to all,

Chris

In response to the enquiries from Chris, the general consensus when we
discussed this a while ago was that CLA is indeed the best place for
general discussions of GNAT. If such discussions overwhelm CLA, then
we can split of a GNAT subgroup, but for now that is not a problem.

Specific questions and requests from help that you want the GNAT group
to address should be emailed to gnat-report@cs.nyu.edu, but general
discussions, e.g. of the library model, can perfectly well go here!

All important GNAT news is posted to comp.lang.ada. We have discussed this
issue with users frequently, most recently at the GNAT users group meeting
at Tri-Ada, and there seems to be general agreement that this makes more
sense than having a separate discussion mailing list, which is why
gnat-chat has been dropped (gnat-chat is now just a synonym for
gnat-report).

We do respond to gnat-request, and have a large list of names, and send
occasional announcements of new versions etc, but this is a largely
inactive list. The best way to keep track of GNAT activities is to
read CLA.

Any specific questions on GNAT should be addressed to gnat-report@cs.nyu.edu
