Subject: Ada training remotely?

Message-ID: <3b631f39$1_7@news3.uncensored-news.com> (raw)

My company has a policy, which they have recently begun to enforce a bit
more aggressively, that all employees should receive forty hours of
training per year. My boss is now bugging me to submit my training plan
for this year before the money (such as it is) runs out.

The only training I can see that will actually *help* me is something in
the intermediate to advanced level in Ada, since I have wrangled them
through main force into agreeing to a two-year porting project, Pascal to
Ada. Now, I've been programming a long time, and have used Ada (on and
off) since it was Green, but I could certainly use some pointers on the
new features in Ada95.

The problem is, my company likes us to get training, but hates to spend
the serious money that good training costs. Their idea of "training" is
to invite an instructor to our site to condense a two-week course down to
three days, and have him train five people who will then be expected to go
out and train a hundred of their colleagues. So I doubt they will spring
for any "real" training of any useful sort, and almost surely will be
unwilling to actually send me anywhere very far out of town (Phoenix, AZ,
USA) to get it.

So, are there any non-worthless Ada correspondence courses I could take?
Web-based, maybe? Snail-mail would be acceptable, and it's possible even
video-based courses might be obtainable through our training center. I
know I'm not going to get anything in-depth, but I was wondering if there
were any alternatives to simply buying a few good textbooks and going the
self-study route. (Which my boss said he would accept, but only if I've
exhausted all other possibilities.) Any suggestions would be welcome.

Not Genro, really, but I hate spam. The email addy does work.
