Which doesn't alter the fact that RedHat (and other Linux related) 
companies got their R&D done for free. The fact that people voluntarily 
release valuable stuff into the world and allow others to then make a 
profit from it without recompense is clear. People do that. Nobody 
forced them to. Its their right to be foolish if they like. Personally, 
I don't think it is basic justice that someone should get their R&D work 
done by someone else and not pay something to the laborer, but if the 
laborer is a willing slave, that's his business. As for me, I'll offer 
my software development talents to those willing to give me a paycheck 
or otherwise compensate me in a manner I find acceptable.

Freedom is the freedom to be a fool if you like. I certainly won't stop 
someone from putting out code under the GPL. Sometimes its to their 
advantage since it can build market share and still have reasonable 
protection from competitors. But releasing something under the GPL is 
not an *obligation* nor is it anyone's *right* to receive software under 
any particular conditions.
