Recently I made an evaluation whether to make further use of Apex or
other compilers. We have Apex already in use as well as other tools.

Subsystems might be useful for big projects even as they do not really
map to the Rose/UML concepts. But in my opinion Apex suffers much more
from other things:

- poor user interface (no syntax highlighting for example)
- too big, too complicatet for small projects
- it does not really work together well with external tools, CM-tools
other than ClearCase for example
- way too expensive, which gets worse through Rational's licence policy
(one_man_one_licence)

A interesting feature of Apex is the re-compile on statement level, but
I found out that this only compensates that Apex compiles very slow. A
good feature is that you can choose the compiler model which allows to
use code for VADS without any further efforts.

After all we decided that Apex does not fit to our small and mid-size
projects and is much too expensive for us. Besides that we have already
a CM in use which does not really fit together with Apex. Unfortunately
there is no flexible and cheap "Apex-light" which I'd like to see from
Rational.

Greetings,

AW
