Ah.
The fact that "=" means "equal" does worry you ?!
How strange...
Unless you had too much violent images in your childhood,
like "==" meaning "equal",
"=" meaning "let... be..."
"a=-b" meaning either "substract b to a", or "let a be -b"
etc.
