Thin clients are available now and have been for many months
(check out www.ncd.com).
Java lost some of its momentum due, I think, to:
1) over-hype
2) pollution of the standard by Microsoft and others
3) Sun trying to keep control of it.
I think it will still be popular, but it seems to have split
into two camps now - J++ / COM and Java / JavaBeans.
