Continuing breakthroughs in the hardware arena, coupled with steady
advances in network connectivity, are opening new opportunities for
embedded applications, but are presenting major challenges for their
designers. The complexities of developing reliable, robust and
efficient distributed and/or real-time applications require appropriate
and adaptable methods, tools, and languages such as Ada.

THE CONFERENCE THEME
This conference will gather industrial experts, researchers, software
engineers and teachers interested in developing industrial strength
real-time software or distributed systems for native or embedded
applications, using Ada and related technologies. Technical or
theoretical papers as well as experience reports in the area of
real-time software or distributed systems with a focus on Ada are
solicited. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
� Standards relating to distributed and real-time software
� Experience reports on the use of Ada for real-time or distributed
applications
� Relationships between Ada and real-time Java
� Real-time CORBA
� Relationship between CORBA and the Ada distributed annex
� Measured error rates and productivity relating to software practices
and technologies used in the development of distributed and
real-time software
� Use of several languages (e.g. Ada, C, C++, Java) for the
implementation of a real-time or distributed system
� Safety critical real-time or distributed applications
� Education and training for the engineering of distributed systems and
real-time software
� Real-time networking and quality of service guarantees
� Fault tolerance and recovery for distributed and real-time software
� Distributed system load balancing
� Performance analysis of distributed and real-time software
� Debugging and monitoring of distributed and real-time software
� Using COTS real-time kernels and other COTS software components as
part of a distributed or real-time system.
� Testing and validation of distributed and real-time software
� Visual modeling of distributed and real-time software
We welcome all submissions pertinent to Ada or of general interest to
the Ada community, from authors inside and outside this community, in
industry, government, research, and education.

HOW YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE
SIGAda '99 is interested in receiving contributions in six major
categories: Technical Articles, Extended Abstracts, Experience Reports,
Workshops, Panel Sessions, and Tutorials. Contributions from students
are actively solicited.
TECHNICAL ARTICLES present significant results in research, practice, or
education. These papers will be refereed and published in a refereed
section of the Proceedings. Papers should not exceed 5000 words
(equivalent to approximately 10 pages, typeset 10-point on 16-point
spacing).
EXTENDED ABSTRACTS discuss current work for which early submission of a
full paper may be premature. If your abstract is accepted, you will be
expected to produce a full paper, which will appear in the Proceedings.
Extended abstracts will be competitively reviewed. Clearly state the
contribution of the work being described, its relationship with previous
work by you and others (with bibliographic references), results to date,
and future directions. Please do not exceed 2500 words (equivalent to
approximately 5 pages typeset 10-point on 16-point spacing).
EXPERIENCE REPORTS present timely results on the application of Ada and
related technologies in the design and implementation of real-time or
distributed applications in the following fields: avionics, aerospace,
automobile, consumer electronics, process control, transportation,
trading systems, energy, medical systems, simulation,
telecommunications, etc.
Such reports will be selected on the basis of the interest of the
experience presented to the community of Ada practitioners. You are
invited to submit a 1-2 page description of the project and the key
points of interest of project experiences. Descriptions may be
published in the final program or proceedings, but a paper will not
be required.
WORKSHOPS are focused work sessions which provide a forum for
knowledgeable professionals to explore issues, exchange views, and
perhaps produce a report on a particular subject. A list of planned
workshops and requirements for participation will be published in the
SIGAda '99 Advance Program. Workshop proposals will be evaluated by the
Program Committee and selected based on their applicability to the
conference and potential for attracting participants. Proposals should
state the problem or issue to be addressed, the coordinator(s), and
criteria for participant selection.
PANEL SESSIONS gather a group of experts on a particular topic who
present their views and then exchange views with each other and the
audience. Panel proposals should be 1-2 pages in length, identifying
the topic, coordinator, and potential panelists.
TUTORIALS offer the flexibility to address a broad spectrum of topics
relevant to Ada, and those enabling technologies which make the
engineering of Ada applications more effective. Submissions will be
evaluated based on relevance, suitability for presentation in tutorial
format, presenter's expertise and past performance.
Tutorial proposals should be 2-3 pages, including the following:
expected level of experience of participants; a tutorial abstract or
outline of approximately 50 words; the expected benefit to the
participants; the qualifications of the instructor(s); a list of
previous presentations of the tutorial, if any; the length of the
tutorial (half, full, or two-day); and the maximum number of
participants desired.

GRANTS TO EDUCATORS
As in past years, SIGAda is offering grants to educators to attend the
conference. Grants cover the registration and tutorial fees; travel
funds are not available. More details on the grant program are

GRANTS FOR STUDENT AUTHORS
Students are specially invited to submit papers describing projects
involving the use of Ada. Papers addressing the conference theme are
particularly encouraged, but are not required. Grants will be awarded
to successful student authors to help defray the cost of attending the
conference to present the paper, and conference fees will be waived.
