As promised during a previous exchange on this forum,
I am providing an update on the status of the download
availability of ObjectAda.

Aonix announces the free availability of ObjectAda.

The following versions of ObjectAda may be downloaded
from the Aonix ftp site, or the PAL mirror (thanks to
the tireless efforts of Rick Conn):

ObjectAda for Windows, Special Edition, v7.1
ObjectAda for SPARC/ Solaris, v7.1
ObjectAda for HP/ HP-UX, v7.1

In addition, these Ada 95 development environments
will be included on the next Walnut Creek CD-ROM
set, which will be distributed at Tri-Ada - another
good reason for you to sign up for what looks like
one of the better Tri-Ada conferences in recent
years!

To download:

The Windows version is available in zip format, while
the Unix versions are available in tar format. Go
to the following directory at the ftp.aonix.com site:

ftp://ftp.aonix.com/pub/ada/public/pal/

In this directory, you will find a ReadMe.txt file.
Please review it. Also in this directory are a
number of subdirectories. The only two that are
useful at this time are:

unix-tar -- which contains the Unix versions
windows-zip -- which contains the Windoww version

The Unix version will be licensed for an unlimited
number of users for six months.

The Windows version has no time limit, however it
does have certain compilation restrictions, and is
licensed for academic use, for evaluative use,
for ensuring 3rd party tool compatibility, for
supporting the writing of articles and books, etc.

Some of the goodies included are the LRM, Rationale,
a demo version of the GUI Builder, a demo version of
Bard Crawford's excellent HOT_Ada tutorial, sample
programs from the outstanding Addison-Wesley Ada
books by Mike Feldman and Simon Johnston, a limited
AdaJava capability, lots of other sample programs,
win32 bindings, on-line help, the JDK, and other
stuff.

Regarding the Windows version specifically, I have
to point out that the Special Edition will *not*
be updated with the upcoming 7.1.1 point release.
This point release *will* impact the Personal,
Professional, Enterprise, and Real-Time editions,
as well as the OpenPack. However we do expect to
update the Special Edition on the next major
release (7.2), slated for a to-be-announced date
in 1998.

For those of you under subscription, the 7.1.1
point release will include a number of important
enhancements to the IDE, external editor support,
ActiveX control import into the GUI Builder,
feature and robustness enhancements to the debugger,
runtime and compiler enhancements, and a number of
other features requested by customers. The precise
ship date is not yet announced, but if you meet
me at the Tri-Ada Aonix booth, I'll be able to
tell you then. :-)

We hope you make good use of this download program,
and we encourage your feedback on it and on the
products themselves.
