One's complement has the advantage that the arithmetic and logical not
operations are the same. Also, I understand that you can save a few
gates
in the adder by using one's complement. But I would be astounded if
anyone designed a new architecure using one's complement. As a practical
matter, one's complement will only exist in legacy Univac equipment and
the Unisys replacements.
