Titles:  Software Engineers/Senior Software Engineers

Location:  Grand Rapids, MI

Description:  Software development; Ada; avionics; aeronautics; senior
engineers

Smiths Industries--a $210 million world-leading developer and producer
of aircraft systems, sensors and electronic control and monitoring
systems--is seeking software development engineers at several skill
and experience levels.  Candidates will benefit from the technically
advanced staff, equipment and product line, as well as the opportunity
for mobility into other specializations and positions and career
advancement.  This fluid work environment supports cross-functional
training and the opportunity to transition from a software- to
hardware-related position.  The acquisition of substantial new
long-term business has prompted Smiths to substantially expand the
size of its professional staff at Grand Rapids, MI.  The Grand Rapids
Aerospace facility presently employs 850 people and plans to increase
this number significantly over the next year.
 

SOFTWARE ENGINEER, ENTRY LEVEL (5 positions)

The entry-level engineer's position, requiring up to 2 years
experience, will assist more experienced engineer-mentors in software
development and learn the development process. These engineers also
will prepare test procedures, implement design, debug code, test
software, analyze results and correct problems. Candidates for this
position should have a bachelors degree in engineering (electrical,
aeronautical, computer or systems), mathematics, physics, systems
science, or computer science, and some software engineering
background, either experiential or academic.


SOFTWARE ENGINEER, JUNIOR LEVEL (6 positions)

Also needed are more experience software development engineers with 2
to 5 years experience, bachelors or masters degrees in engineering
(electrical, computer, etc.), computer science, math or physics, and
at least 1 year of software development. Those with C/C++ or Ada
experience are preferred. These engineers will design and develop
software requirements, implement and debug software, apply software
reusability techniques, interface with other engineering functions,
participate in customer field testing, learn advanced concepts from
mentors and participate in improving the engineering process.


SOFTWARE ENGINEER, INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (3 positions)

Software development engineers with some experience in real-time
embedded systems and avionics knowledge and 5 to 8 years of experience
will design, develop, test and debug software; apply software
reusability techniques; provide cost and schedule estimates;
interfaces with other engineering functions; remains technically
competent via seminars and symposiums; and provide mentorship to new
engineers. These engineers will have a bachelors degree in either
engineering (electrical, aeronautical, etc.), math, computer science
or physics,  and Ada language experience is preferred. A masters
degree is a plus. The candidate also should have a minimum of  3 years
of software development experience.


SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER (3 positions)

The Senior Engineer positions will be filled by experienced avionics
real-time embedded  systems software engineers with specific technical
experience as well as a minimum of 8 years of engineering experience.
Specific areas of expertise may include avionics flight planning,
avionics guidance, avionics navigation, avionics performance or
real-time embedded operating executives for Ada applications. These
engineers will work independently: analyzing performance and designing
trade studies; providing expertise in specific areas of software
development, such as avionics, support software, etc.; interface with
other engineering functions; and provide advanced topic mentorship to
engineers in an area of expertise, among other duties. The successful
candidate will have a bachelors degree in engineering (electrical,
computer, aeronautical, etc.), computer science, physics or math; a
masters degree is preferred. At least 5 years of software development
experience and at least 1 year of Ada language experience also is
required.
