Hey, look at this! Apparently, there's enough of an Ada market for
someone to be offering alternatives to Ada!

Subject: PEARL - a language for people interested in "realtime"
 computing

There is an alternative to ADA available, a realtime language
 primarily
used in Germany, called PEARL (Process and Experiment Automation
Realtime Language). It is a child of Algol like Modula and Pascal,
but with realtime language elements like "ALL 0.5 SEC ACTIVATE task",
"WHEN interrupt RESUME task", "REQUEST semaphore". There is PEARL and
the successor PEARL-90. There are several implementations by
 commercial
companies and university institutes, which differ in the
 implementation
level or language standard (BASIC PEARL, FULL PEARL, PEARL-90).

There are a number of books out for PEARL in german language, but just
 one
 book in english language:

 Wulf Werum, Hans Windauer:
 Introduction to PEARL
 Vieweg Publishing, 3rd. edition, 1985
 ISBN: 3-528-23590-X

An unlimited shareware test version of "PEARL 90" by the software
 company
WERUM is available in the ftp-server directory

 ftp://ftp.fh-bielefeld.de/pub/systems/linux/Pearl-90/

The company WERUM has special student and education
 (university/school)
prices for their WERUM-PEARL versions for MSDOS (real mode) and
 another
for OS/2 (16-bit). With the MSDOS version, You may do all the tricks
 You
 know from TURBO-PASCAL !

You just may not sell programs (source and binaries) without the
 shareware or the educational versions.

You may also ask for a complete language manual "PEARL 90 Language
 Report,
Jan 1992" (good for learning, in opposite to the ADA manual), directly
from the software company. Usually the paper manual costs 50 DM, plus
 postage
and packing, but maybe people situated outside Germany should beg for
 a free
"electronic" version sent to You back by email:

 WERUM DV Systeme GmbH
 Erbstorfer Landstr. 14
 D21337 Lneburg
 Germany
 Phone: +49-(0)4131-8900-0
 email: pearl90@werum.de

Another implementation of PEARL, called RTOS-PEARL, running on the
 ATARI-ST
and many professional VMEbus boards is available from

 Institut fr Regelungstechnik
 University of Hannover
 Appelstr. 11
 D30167 Hannover
 Germany
 Phone: +49-(0)511-762-4512

This address above is the right one for contacts from universities !
The price is rather low in comparison to the WERUM prices ! Commercial
distribution of these and other versions is done by

 IEP GBRmbH
 Bachstr. 1
 D30167 Hannover
 Germany
 Phone: +49-(0)511-71 68 40
 Fax: +49-(0)511-701 11 31

As far as I know, there is still no english documentation for
 RTOS-PEARL.

I myself am the coordinator of the "PEARL pool" for "HEISE Verlag",
a publishing company in Germany. The "PEARL pool" is a collection of
public domain software and free software written in PEARL language or
written for the operating system RTOS-UH (the runtime system for
RTOS-PEARL). Usually this software is written by german people with
comments and dialogs in **german** language. This software is
 distributed
on 3 1/2 disks for money (and is therefore not available in the
 INTERNET).
Nevertheless, the "PEARL pool" consists of free software contributions
 of
hobbyists, students, engineers,... Currently, there are 22 disks
 (spring
1996), for 10 DM each, available, plus postage and packing, from

 eMedia GmbH
 Bissendorfer Strasse 8
 D30625 Hannover
 Germany
 Phone: +49-(0)511-53 72 95
 Fax: +49-(0)511-53 52 147

I don't get any money from sales !

The publishing company "HEISE Verlag" features RTOS-PEARL and the
 operating
system RTOS-UH since 1985, especially the version for the ATARI-ST.
