Something I've never heard discussed are cases where critical hardware
really does go bad (like, ahem, sensors producing "impossible" values)
and the resulting switch to backup hardware really does prevent a
major failure. How often does this happen? (I know, a very vague
question, but perhaps enough to get a discussion started)
