Also on this topic (How Visual C++ is killing Ada9X) Greg is right. Please not
e
that MS has sold +25M copies of Windows. That is a huge market. Not only for
end users, but for development tools. Honestly, most of that market is not
"mission critical" (ie someone or the planet will die if the software fails)
but it is still out there and there are a lot of "niche" market products
that people want developed.

I have been asked about developing some very niche market products for Windows
environment. The end user/client could care less what they are written in just
that it works. I would like to develop them in Ada, but the tools and
environment to do the job are in C++, Object Pascal, SmallTalk, etc. Multiple
that by thousands (maybe millions) of other software engineers trying to meet
everyday needs of their clients.

Note: I was contacted by a vendor to give specific details about what problems
I have with their compiler and toolset. They actually seemed like they wanted
to
do something about the situation, so in the spirit of David Gergen - when asked
I will serve (and help out).
