A while back someone asked me how to build GUI on Motif using Ada...
The following is a posting on *comp.newprod*! Thought that this might
interest some of the netters in THIS group. I'm sending Alsys' announcement
without permission nor being awarded any commission. :-(

p.s. Maybe some netters were right about Alsys' kissing off Ada...

That announcement was posted only to comp.newprod because commercial
announcements are not permitted on the INFO-ADA mailing list (which is
gatewayed to/from comp.lang.ada) according to AJPO guidelines.

To my knowledge, neither AJPO nor AdaIC has any formal connection to
INFO-ADA any more. Unless I am really off base, it is maintained by a
volunteer, through a machine with no AJPO ties. In the days before
widespread use of netnews, INFO-ADA was indeed connected somehow to
AJPO. I believe now that AJPO has the same one vote each of us has
in determining what is appropriate for an unmoderated list.

The government, in things it sponsors (AdaIC, for example) feels the
need to be scrupulously careful about not seeming to play favorites.
Sometimes I think they go a little too far, but that's not my opinion.

My opinion is that announcements in reasonably good taste should be
welcome here, especially in view of the Ada industry's really dismal record
in informing the world about what they have to offer. Use common sense:
avoid blatant commercialism, hyberbolic claims, vaporware, etc. Such
things ought to be flamed mercilessly. But informational announcements,
preferably with useful pricing info, have a place here. Just my $0.02.

Am I right about the status of INFO-ADA?

Then may I ask why Alsys' Linda posted a pointer announcement after I posted
the original announcement from comp.newprod for Alsys? Wouldn't her post
be considered as commercial announcement as well? What about Aharonian's
post about seeking business partners? His post didn't even mention *Ada*.

Strangest thing happened to me: I've been getting many flames/complaints
from Alsys employees after I did Alsys a BIG favour by pointing Alsys' Ada
on OSF/Motif GUI seminar to the Ada community. (After 4 ~ 5 complaints from
folks at Alsys I had to write a script to junk any mail from alsys.com. :-))

I have to admit I joked a little about Alsys' trying to kiss off Ada.
Apparently none of those who flamed me took it too well. They didn't even
have the guts to admit that the announcement was in the not-so-appropriate
place. (It's like running an ad on F-16 fighter jet on Motor Trend.)
Instead they chose to defend Alsys' ill-fated marketing tactics.

BTW, the many posts I've seen on comp.newprod are about *products*, either
software or hardware, not stuff like seminar. Is that weird or what?

A while back I posted something to comp.lang.ada, with the following
snide disclaimer:

Disclaimer: posted to comp.lang.ada. No responsible for violations
of netiquette on gatewayed mailing lists.

(or somesuch)

I was flamed by by the gatekeeper (Karl, I think) who pointed out
that he had set up the gateway and didn't have time to moderate
it. But, other than that, nothing happened - no funny clicks on
my home phone number, no faceless men asking my neighbors questions,
no IRS audits, no funn

As per the the Alsys' post from Linda, I sent here an email message asking why
they did not post the announcement in this group. I never received a direct re
ply but I did see
the announcement reappear in this group.

I would like to see the vendors announce their new products and services in thi
s group.
It helps us keep informed with what is available.

As for Greg and his post - more power to him. I hope he makes some money becau
se of his announcement.

While your re-posting of our comp.newprod announcement occurred before we
posted the pointer in comp.lang.ada, because of the delays inherent in
USENET news your re-posting article did not arrive at this site until 12
hours after we had posted the pointer.

>Wouldn't her post
>be considered as commercial announcement as well?

In my opinion it does not. I reviewed the AJPO guidelines before the
original posting was made and decided comp.newprod was the right place to
put it, but that we could put a pointer to it in comp.lang.ada. I waited
until after it appeared to comp.newprod to post the pointer (it is hard to
predict how much delay there will be when you go post an article to a
moderated group).

>What about Aharonian's
>post about seeking business partners? His post didn't even mention *Ada*.

I don't recall exactly what he said, but as an Ada vendor I don't think it
is appropriate for us to attempt to enforce the guidelines. We simply
trying to follow them, if other vendors or businesses choose to ignore them
that doesn't make it OK for us to do so.

The INFO-ADA mailing list is not moderated, there is no moderator to enforce
the guidelines. Also, the AJPO guidelines are not well known, there is no
reference to them in the FAQ and they aren't periodically posted to INFO-ADA
(as far as I know). So there is little compliance, a lot of people think
they should be relaxed (that is also my personal opinion) and choose to
ignore them. But until the guidelines are changed, we will continue to try
to follow them.

>I have to admit I joked a little about Alsys' trying to kiss off Ada.

Humorous comments are traditionally marked with a smilie :-) on USENET, that
particular comment wasn't. I assumed that it was just an error and everyone
would know that the thread you were indirectly referring to was about
Verdix.

I'm sure everyone must be getting tired of this discussion by now, if
there's more to be said on this, let's take it to email.
