I desperately need a FTPable Ada compiler for a comparative programming
languages assignment. Where can I find one? I did an archie search and
found nothing of interest.

Thanks.

P.S.: If there is a FAQ list that covers this sort of thing, I apologize.

Good news! Several nice Ada/Ed's are now available at WUARCHIVE. The 386/486
version I presume you are looking for is an enhanced version of NYU's original
Ada/Ed-C. At GWU we have added a Turbo-ish editor, character graphics and
math libraries (included with credit to their developers), a searchable
Language Reference Manual, and other such niceties. The executables are
available at WUARCHIVE in the directory languages/ada/adaed/gwu/dos.
See the sample anonymous ftp session with directory listings below.

A very preliminary port of Ada/Ed to (large) Macintoshes, developed by
Jacques Rouillard of Marseille, France, is in the directory
languages/ada/adaed/mac. See the doc file there for details. The
user interface is very nice and clever; the compiler has certain
stability problems which you can read about in the doc file.

These two distributions are in self-extracting archive form; the
archives are sized to fit on high-density diskettes if you wish
to download and redistribute them. They are free and freely
distributable.

The original NYU distributions are in languages/ada/adaed/nyu. The
(large) tar file contains the Unix sources; other files provide DOS
executables and sources as originally built by NYU.

The sources for the GWU DOS and Rouillard Mac systems will be made
available eventually, under GNU General Public License rules. Please
understand that we are not yet putting up the sources because both
systems are under very active development and we don't want horrible
version control problems.

In return for our putting these things on the anonymous archives, we
would very much appreciate your sending e-mail to mfeldman@seas.gwu.edu,
just to let us know you've become users. That will help us in our search
for funding to continue doing neat things like this and giving them away.

Good luck - have fun!
