Richard Reid at MSU has been publishing a survey of language use in CS1 for the
last 3-4 years. He normally posts in comp.edu (you can get the raw data
there). In the 7th, and most recent survey, the top languages were:

Language       Now       6th Survey
-----------------------------------
  Pascal       124		123
  Ada           57		 26
  Modula-2/-3   50               35
  Scheme        50               18
  C             21               21
  FORTRAN        8                6
  C++            7                6

Certainly this is not a scientific survey, and I'm not sure what bias there is
in the schools that respond, but he seems to have gone to great lengths to
verify the data he did receive. I'll leave it at that.

Rich
