<= already has another meaning, so that wouldn't work. As some of us have pointed out before, an early version of Ada did have different symbols; instead of the arrow, =>, it used =: for IN parameters, := for OUT parameters, :=: for IN OUT parameters. I don't really know why this idea was dropped before Ada 83 was finalized. I'm beginning to think it should have been left in. Especially now that [IN] OUT parameters are allowed in function calls; I've been big on the idea of providing some syntax for a function call that would let the reader know that the call might be changing one of the parameters.
