York's ADA compiler summary
---------------------------
Thanks to those who answered, we are now going to order a
compiler and will try to use it on a small course later this
spring. If any interesting happen i will summarize to the net.
Here follows a short collection of the answers, (edited by me
though).

The York Ada compiler is distributed to commercial institutions
outside the UK by SPL international. As far as I remember it
costs about 10 000 USD and the 1 000 USD per year in sweden.
I believe that it might be possible for you to get a cheaper
academic license if you talk directly to York.

Contact Dr Ian Wand or Prof Ian Pyle.
We had a preliminary version on our machine (erix at L M
ERICSSON) but it was full of bugs.
Comment:
We did contact the University directly and it seems they have a
NONE commercial license for 150 GBP.

We had release 0 of the UNIX version (the other one is for VMS)
on trial a while back. It was rather flakey, but the code it
eventually produced seemed all right. Release 1, which is
hopefully better, is now available. It is *very* expensive,
though, this not being the fault of the guys at York, but rather
because Maggie seems to think that selling software is one way
to get the British economy back on its feet...

This subset of ADA (without generics) is slow. I wrote a program
to print "Hello, world" which took several minutes to compile
and resulted in over 50K of object code.
