I've thought a lot about how to design such a thing, and I don't think it's easy. Ada types don't work, because they vanish when the program exits, whereas files out-live programs. And I don't see VMS files as being a good basis for that. If they're the "precursor" as you say, they are extremely primitive. And yet super complicated. I never used RSX-11. - Bob
