It would be so much simpler to use the OS-provided facility, than having
to resort to this complicated library which is trying to wrap a stream
interface around shared-memory buffers.
At least, it would be in POSIX. No doubt the Windows API makes it more
complicated ...

Windows is the one that keeps files locked, *nix systems typically do not.
