Of course, breaking compatibility has a cost - and benefits. Gratuitous changes should be avoided, but it is a matter of evaluating the cost/benefit ratio. In the free software world, people often do not refrain from making incompatible changes - a bit too often to my taste. OTOH, there is this famous quote from the people who made "make": The day after we released it, we realized that using the Tab was a big mistake; but it was too late to make a change, we had more than 20 users...
