Why cannot the end data consumer access data directly? They can, but a tool like Excel can provide capabilties not present in the original system without retooling. I use it, for instance, to make pretty charts out of Ada data -- not wanting to create some charting mechanism nor a PDF writer. (I note that libraries for both of those things exist for Ada, so maybe I ought to rethink that down the road.) Excel is also great for playing with data to find out things that you didn't previously know (sorting and formulas can easily be applied). Ada will never be good for exploratory tasks. Randy.
