That's part of it; Emacs runs on every host OS I need to use, so I don't need to learn another user interface. And I will spend time learning how to do something new in LaTeX (in Emacs), rather than use Word for a "quick memo". The new knowledge will be useful later, and I don't risk Word trashing the memo as it lives beyond the initial use. But more importantly, keyboard interfaces are simply more productive than WIMP interfaces; it takes less time to get the job done.
