Ada (the woman) was born on this date in 1815.
Ada (the language) was born on this date in 1980.

And Ada 2012 was officially standardized on this date in 2012 (last year).
Randy.
(Yes, we asked that they do that, since it was going to be in December
anyway. And ISO said, no we have to issue everything on the 15th. But when
it came out, it was dated the 10th.)

Cool. I remember it being the 15th. I hadn't heard that it ended up being dated
the 10th.

ISO.org has it listed as:
Stage: 60.60 (2012-12-10)
where the date is obvious. I've never looked into the actual Standard, not
having 238 CHF handy. :-), but I'd expect the document to have the same
date.

Off-topic here ... but you where on the Commitee that wrote the standard,
right? That makes you one of the authors of the standard. And ISO didn't
bother to give you a copy for free? I am stunned!

Still off‑topic but to say it may be that: I knew (on the web only) a guy
who wrote a music for a short film, “pro bono”, and he didn't even receive
a free copy of the DVD to thanks him.

ISO doesn't give the editors copies (or at least I don't get one, and I'm
officially listed as editor of the Ada Standard). They did send a copy of
the Ada 95 Corrigendum, but that's the only ISO Ada Standard document that
I've seen.

So why is the PDF Copy at http://www.adaic.org/resources/add_content/standards/12rm/RM-Final.pdf dated "13 December 2012" (at the bottom of the pages)? I don't see a different date anywhere else.

The free versions are not related to the official ISO versions. The date on
the bottom is just a generation date that automatically added somewhere
along the line; that's obviously the day that I generated it for posting. If
I regenerated it today, it would have today's date.
The standardization date is the one on the ISO website, which I detailed in
a different message.

Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ada King, Countess of Lovelace.
Usually someone further east beats me to this, but they've fallen down on the
job today.

You shouldn't celebrate so much you fall down.
Today is also the 35th anniversary of the Ada programming language, MIL-STD 1815
(Ada 80), presented by Ichbiah, Barnes, and Firth at the Ada Launch.

I object (like any one cares) to SPARK on the timeline. May as well add Oracle's PRO/SQL if doing that... Pigeon holing Ada to a niche market is a long term disaster even if a short term lifeline for AdaCore.

Oh my! I've used SPARK (the original version) and found it to be a very expressive language with a mature toolset that delivered what it promised. The SPARK 2014 update is a very relevant enhancement to the language. It belongs in the timeline.

This has been discussed at the time. The standard was ready for
submission (and available in Gnat) in December 2005, and it would not
have made sense to name it in the future.

Nonsense. I wasn't involved with Ada at the time, but ARM-83 was published on
1983 Feb 17, so it was most likely ready for submission in 1982, but we don't
call it Ada 82. It made sense to name it in the future. ARM-95 was ready for
submission in 1994, but we don't call it Ada 94. It made sense to name it in the
future. There would have been no more inconvenience in using Ada 0X until
publication, at which time we'd have called it Ada 07, than there was in using
Ada 9X until publication, at which time we called it Ada 95.
(I know of only one person who was inconvenienced by not knowing the name of 9X
in advance of publication, and while I owe him my understanding of information
hiding, I don't consider one person's inconvenience enough to warrant that
ridiculous and confusing name for ISO/IEC 8652:2007.)

I agree with Jeff, but it pretty much no longer matters, 'cause people on
the bleeding edge are using Ada 2012, and everyone else is using Ada 95.
Outside of the ACATS and language lawyer stuff, I never mention Ada 2007, er
Ada 2005.

In these cases, no compiler was available at the time the standard was
ready. AdaCore insisted on keeping the name Ada2005, because they wanted
to advertise that Gnat was already available for the new standard (I was
personnally not in favour of that, but it was a deliberate, voted,
decision).

Primeval times when Babbage dwelt:
not were bit nor byte
nor operating system,
not hardware below
nor above software,
abyss abundant,
but computer nowhere.
And lo, there was Ada,
and Ada separated the numbers
and split them,
in Zero and One did she split them.
And there was Zuse,
and Zuse created the beast Z1,
which fed on the numbers
created by Ada,
and there was absolute joy among mankind.
And mankind created languages
that they be able to command the creatures
which fed on the numbers,
and the numbers were commands
and the commands were numbers.
And there rose two giants,
Fortran and Algol.
And the giants were fruitful and multiplied,
and sprang from them of languages countless many:
APL and PL/1,
Simula and Jovial,
Lisp and Cobol.
And Wirth created Pascal and Modula.
And there were Oberon and Occam and Eiffel,
C and C++,
Prolog and Smalltalk.
And there was a great confusion among mankind,
and one man did not understand the other man's words,
and some did not understand their own words.
And DoD spake:
"Let us restore concord among mankind
and create ONE language,
that all men speak the same language,
in the large as in the small."
And there arose Strawman,
and Strawman begat Woodenman,
and Woodenman begat Tinman,
and Tinman begat Ironman.
Ironman however begat Steelman.
And lo, from him emerged of colours four:
Red, Green, Yellow and Blue.
And the colours were weighed and found wanting
except one.
And ANSI spake to Green:
"Ada shalt be thy name henceforth
and servest all mankind
in the large as in the small."
And DoD spake:
"Thou shalt not have another language beside Ada."
And Ada shone in beauty,
and it was the day of the Lord
the 10th of December 1980.

No. 83, 95, and ISO/IEC 8652:2007 were not published on Dec 10. Probably 2X
won't be, either.

No. It was mostly a coincidence. We were told that the Ada 2012 Standard
would be published in the December 15th batch of Standards. Joyce Tokar made
a request to date it December 10th in honor of Ada's birthday; she got a
response that ISO couldn't do that. When it actually was published (around
December 15th), we found they had dated it December 10th as requested. Not
sure when/where/how they changed their mind.
If it had been scheduled for, say, February 15th, such a request wouldn't
make any sense. We wouldn't want to delay the Standard for months just so it
can have a cool date.
Randy.

"[I]t is easy to use [Ada] just like any other
language: using only predefined types, using
packages just for separate compilation (without
any consideration for information hiding),
ignoring generics altogether, etc. I have seen
projects doing this; they didn't get much
gain from using Ada, and spent a lot of time
fighting the compiler."
