RR Software sold large numbers of Ada compilers to schools and students from the mid 1980's until GNAT put us out of that business, and this is the first I ever heard of "checks from the DoD". (Most students bought the compilers dirrectly from us, like other textbooks.) Early GNAT work was funded as part of the Ada 9x project (something RRS wasn't particularly happy about, but we could hardly complain given our own work as part of that project).
