If they are a net consumer, and the grid stops providing, they must shut down if their local demand would exceed capacity dangerously. The news reports made it sound like the automation to implement the above failed. But who can believe news reports? One dingbat for the longest time kept glibly informing us of the (correct) geographic spread of the outage and that (not even close) it affected eleven million people. How can anyone educated enough to be trusted with a mike not notice that eleven million is absurd for just New York, Ottawa, Toronto, and Cleveland alone?
