It is a big advantage of being well behind the leader: you *know* what is good and what is bad at your current stage, from the leader's experience, and you can relatively easily use the leader's past technological achievements. But don't worry too much, because there is another effect also: when a competitor, which uses this tactics extensively, approaches the leader (that is, the distance to the leader becomes relatively small) then the competitor loses perspective, and starts to experience severe burdens, for which he is not prepared. As a consequence his behaviour becomes essentially random, self-contradictory, and overall stupid. The probable finale of that behaviour is a crash, which comes one way or another, and can be softer or harder, depending of various circumstances.
