CS1, where I teach it, also serves the larger community (90% CS non-majors). However, by the time they get to CS2, they are all prospective CS majors, have already had enough training in UNIX, by way of getting into e-mail/IRC/MUD/MOO that UNIX is not a problem. They are in fact at a stage where they want more challenges than a Pascal on the MAC can offer. In other words they are motivated enough to move to a less friendly environment. Of course, the first time I will teach it like this is next fall...so we still have to wait and see.
