I don't know if this is fortunate or not, the likelihood of this information being usful for anything but answering trick questions is low :-) As for it being a surprise that a and b or x is not accepted, I don't really think so. People can always be surprised if they don't know things, but this is a very familiar rule, and the error msg you get if you violate it will be clear enough.
