This report presents information on a year's worth of activity, dated from September, 1993 to August, 1994. Due to disk crashes and other problems encountered during this period, the activity logs were occasionally incomplete (during August, 1994, for example, the PAL mirror site at ftp.cdrom.com had a hard disk crash that resulted in the loss of three weeks of file transfer data), so this report presents minimum figures. Additionally, users accessing the PAL by mechanisms other than anonymous File Transfer Protocol (FTP) are not included in this report. These mechanisms include the World Wide Web, gopher, ftpmail, remote NFS mounts across the Internet, and CDROM and other indirect distributions. >From September 1993 to August 1994, the PAL was accessed by 1,531 organizations in 54 countries, transferring at total of 82,326 files. The PAL mirror sites at ftp.cdrom.com and ftp.cnam.fr transferred a total of 71,242 files (36,307 files to ftp.cdrom.com and 34,935 files to ftp.cnam.fr) from the main PAL site at wuarchive.wustl.edu, but this total is not included in the 82,326 figure (that is, the total number of files transferred, including the mirror sites, is 153,568). Of these 54 countries, the top distribution figures go to: United States at 49,014 files to 937 organizations, including: 40 network access providers, 360 commercial firms, 448 educational institutions, 88 government organizations France at 6,208 files to 116 organizations Germany at 3,231 files to 96 organizations Australia at 2,378 files to 6 organizations Canada at 2,326 files to 68 organizations Belgium at 2,108 files to 5 organizations United Kingdom at 1,898 files to 5 organizations Switzerland at 1,233 files to 21 organizations Netherlands at 1,051 files to 26 organizations Sweden at 861 files to 25 organizations Israel at 683 files to 2 organizations Italy at 491 files to 34 organizations Spain at 476 files to 24 organizations Detailed activity reports can be found in the PAL in the directory languages/ada/userdocs/activity/pal_logs in the file log_total.zip. These activity reports contain information on the organizations involved. The file log_total.zip is updated approximately monthly.
