During this downtime we will also be committing wuarchive to the OSF/1 operating system. This downtime is part of a continuing program to enhance the services offered by wuarchive, which is supported in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation. As part of the downtime, we will be combining all of the archive disks (/archive, /archive/decus, /archive/usenet, /archive/systems and /archive/mirrors*) into a single 14.6 gigabyte logical volume. This will have a number of positive benefits, including: o A Single NFS mount point to access the entire archives, rather than nine. o All free space will be combined, leading to less wasted space. o Disk striping may be enabled when it is available, permitting really massive I/O performance. o /mirrors* will no longer be necessary. The reason wuarchive will be down so long is that it will be necessary to backup the entire system, create and initialize the logical volume and then restore the backup. It takes quite a long time to create a backup of 11-something gigabytes of data, and even longer to restore it. As noted above, the archives currently consists of eight disk drives. Each disk drive must be mounted as a particular part of the directory structure. For example, one disk is mounted as /archive/mirrors. By going to a single logical volume, it will no longer be necessary to have the various /archive/mirrors directories. IN THE TWO WEEKS AFTER THE DOWNTIME, ALL OF THE /MIRRORS DIRECTORIES WILL DISAPPEAR. All of the material in the mirrors directories will be placed into the /systems hierarchy, which will be slightly reorganized to accommodate all of the new information. This downtime will affect all services offered by wuarchive: o Anonymous FTP access, o FSP access, o NFS access, IMPORTANT: YOU MUST DISMOUNT *ALL* ARCHIVE PARTITIONS BEFORE THE DOWNTIME BEGINS: /archive /archive/usenet /archive/systems /archive/mirrors /archive/mirrors2 /archive/mirrors3 /archive/mirrors4 o Nameservice o All e-mail going to/passing through wuarchive will be delayed.
