For example, if you want to fix a photograph on a sheet of paper, do you move the photograph with your hand or do you have buttons and menus built into your desk that you can press and that, in effect, will arrange for a robot to fetch the photo and move it to some place on the sheet of paper lying in front of you? Direct manipulation is the obvious way.
