Physicians serve internships and residencies after graduation from medical school. Graduate students in the sciences are typically mentored by their advisors - sometimes well, sometimes not. They often have to take postdoctoral fellowships as well before obtaining a permanent position. In the life sciences in particular, it can take years. Bob -- Robert L.
