I know that.  That is why I used words like
"many-times-more-expensive" and "over-the-counter".

When building a new operating system, in the post-Mach, post-Windows
NT age, where the ground has been scorched, and there are no DARPA
projects pushing hundreds of millions of dollars at OS research, there
is little point in building something that requires custom hardware.
