try this with your Java compiler:

	int k;  // not initialised

	try
	    {
		k = Integer.parseInt("abc");
	    }
	catch (NumberFormatException nfe)
	    {
		k = Integer.parseInt("abc");
		// That's stupid, o.K., but Sun's compiler is silent.
		// same for jikes
	    }

	if (k == 0)  // no complaint here
	    {
		k++;  // neither
	    }

Is this consistent?
