Here is the (short) SGML definition: 4.96 document: A collection of information that is processed as a unit. A document is classified as being af a particular document type. NOTE--In this International Standard, the term almost invariably means (without loss of accuracy) an SGML document. XML 1.0: By construction, XML documents are conforming SGML documents. [Definition: A data object is an XML document if it is well-formed, as defined in this specification.
