(In theory at least) In a totally free market, nobody could maintain a monopoly on anything forever. This is because there are always substitutes and sooner or later an alternate supplier will emerge. (Of course, sooner or later, we'll all be dead, too. :-) Of course, this doesn't mean Micro$oft is not a monopoly - just a business that if they are a monopoly, they are about to become part of an Oligopoly - or maybe just another player among many. Why else would they be so scared of Open Source? Its allowing smaller players to emerge and chip away at their market.
