The first Ada compiler I owned was the Telesoft Ada compiler and that was not validated. IIRC, the version of Janus Ada I owned was not validated either. There was a time back in The Bad Old Days when if you wanted a validated compiler, they couldn't be had except on some rather expensive platforms and at some rather steep prices and generally there were lots of reasons not to be happy with what they (or the companies that sold them) did. Certainly Janus Ada was a turning point in the history of Ada in that it made it accessible at a price within the bounds of an average programmer. And of course what today is considered "modest" hardware would have been considered fast/big for a mainframe back then. One of the things that hurt Ada was that it was ahead of the hardware needed by a few years. Once we got beyond 640k limits and hard drives didn't require a bank note to buy, the environment was there - but already the bad reputation had got started.
