While I don't have first hand experience with them, I'd suspect that lots of fly-by-wire flight controls are of similar design - and that's pretty critical if it were to fail and turn the plain into a lawn-dart. "Dissimilar" doesn't necessarily equate to "Better" - and even if it did, it might just be the enemy of "Good Enough".
