That is because their great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great Grandfather had a bigger axe. Then sometime around the 13th Century (if my history memory serves me and I am sure you can readily correct me if I am wrong) rather than having another axe contest, the guys with the next biggest axes signed an agreement that formalized the convention for following generations so the Big Axe guys could raise children without the need to learn how to use an axe. Then other than an occasional quick axing (I guess a few children decided to become proficient at the axe anyway) in order to make subtle realignments to the convention the foundations of the British system was formed. Now it has generally been an effective system, however, if they had chosen to share the wealth a bit more, the United Kingdom would be a lot bigger than it is. The lesson being is if you are into world domination you shouldn't be perceived as being too greedy. Bob O - Computing for fun
